FUNNY GIRL 1968 UK Quad Original Film Poster 30 x 40
Funny Girl 1968 is hailed as one of the greatest musical films ever made. Written for the screen by Isobel Lennart who also originated the book for the earlier stage production on Broadway. It’s a biographical film charting the life and rise to fame of the American stage star Fanny Brice, and also her turbulent marriage to handsome and charming playboy Nicky Arnstein. In the lead role of Fanny is Barbra Streisand, making her film debut, and reprising her award winning role from the Broadway stage show. Omar Sharif plays Nicky Arnstein and they’re supported by Kay Medford, Anne Francis and Walter Pidgeon. The film went on to be the highest grossing film of 1968 and garnered 8 Oscars nominations with Streisand winning for best actress. That year, and the only time before or since, that category was a tie. Streisand had to share her win with Katherine Hepburn who was also deemed to have won for her role in The Lion In Winter. Although Hepburn’s performance was good, it was not the tour de force performance of a formidable talent like Streisand’s in a film debut. Due to the controversary, the Academy has never allowed a tie to happen again. Streisand went on to win Best Actress for Funny Girl in other numerous award ceremonies.
