A stunningly beautiful Polish movie poster by Andrzej Pagowski of this Japanese film. When this poster was first put out on display in the gallery - the first woman to notice it said “Nice t…, shame about the face!” - a light hearted observation of what is a dark story. The film covers the harsh life of villagers in a remote area of Japan. Food is short in supply and the film explores the fine line between life and death. On reaching the age of 70 years, the elderly are expected to follow the legendary brutal custom of Obasute - where they must be taken high up Mount Narayama and left to die starving and freezing in the cold winter weather. Starring: Ken Ogata and Sumiko Sakamoto.
