ALFIE 1966 BFI 2001 Re Release UK Quad Original Film Poster
Alfie is a 1966 comedy drama film based on a play by Bill Naughton, of the same title, from 1964. The film stars Michael Caine as Alfie, a selfish womanising lothario, so self centred he just uses woman for his own pleasure and gain and then discards them without as much as a backward glance. Eventually his way of life catches up with him and forces him to to take a closer look at his behaviour, his choices, his life….his direction. Amongst the female supporting cast are Julia Foster, Millicent Martin, Jane Asher, Shirley Anne Field, Vivien Merchant, Eleanor Bron and the wonderful Shelley Winters. Directed by lewis Gilbert, Alfie was a ground breaking film for it’s time, dealing with social issues and social behaviour particularly the issue of abortion. A huge success at the box office around the world Alfie still generates enormous interest from movie goers whenever it’s re issued, as is the case with this specially commissioned poster from the 2001 BFI Re-release. The imagery is studio produced photography featuring Michael Caine as Alfie.
